What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a law, which was ratified by the EU parliament in April 2016 and will take effect from May 2018. This does not only affect companies based in the European Union, but all companies who intend to deal with customers in any of the EU member states.
Even with Brexit around the corner, UK businesses should still update their websites to meet the new privacy standard, if they want to sell their products or services abroad.
Penalties for non-compliance can be fined up to 4% of your annual global turnover (up to a maximum of € 20 Million)!
What do I have to do?
This new law will prohibit collection of information related to any natural person without prior consent. That means any registration of customer data, email addresses, setting of cookies or collecting of visitor information, for example via Google Analytics, need to be accepted by a customer prior to the visit to your website. Furthermore a version of your website has to be accessible without the collection of any personal information or cookies.
